Manageable Garden

With frequent trips abroad, our client, a busy artist, found that he would return to find his garden overgrown.

Our brief was to create a garden which was easily managed and that retained a “lost garden” feel if left unchecked for periods of time.

With the back of the property being West facing, we were also asked to improve the amount of light projected into the rear living space.

Site Inspection

The existing garden was composed of a long grassy area with shrubs and tall conifers to either side.

We were asked to retain a mature sumac, situated towards the rear of the garden, and jasmine and clematis which dominated the space surrounding the patio area.

The site's boundary afforded little security and was in need of improvement.

Work Carried Out

Although some of the plants were not ideally in keeping with the theme, we chose to create a North African feel to the garden.

We began by upgrading the garden's boundary, adding a higher fence & gate to add security at the back of the property. A shed was repositioned to provide more space.

We removed all fast growing shrubs and plants, helping to reduce the burden of maintenance and greatly improve the garden's feeling of space. Taller conifers were trimmed and lower portions cut back to provide more light.

Paved areas were reshaped to provide a less rectangular feel.

Wooden frames were used to take the climbing jasmine and clematis away from the property's windows and further into the garden, where they offered dappled shade to the central seating area.

By replacing the grassy area with gravel, we reduced the level of maintenance. In addition, it served to reflect light into the rear living space.

The garden was completed with the addition of brightly coloured and terracotta pots, filled with drought tolerant and succulent plants.
